MatakanaThis delightful little village is located approximately 10 minutes from Warkworth. Originally the major industry was timber milling but later general farming was the mainstay of life in Matakana. The wharf at the time was frequented by old scows and steamers that carried the produce to and from Auckland but now it is picnicers and those launching small boats and kayaks that use the wharf most. Today it is the wine and tourist trade along with the cafes, fantastic movie theatres and restaurants that is the focus of attention at Matakana. Each Saturday the Matakana market in the heart of the village buzzes with the sounds of music and the great number of people simply enjoying the ambiance that gives Matakana its well deserved reputation. Matakana is also the gateway to Omaha Beach, Point Wells, the Takatu Peninsula and Tawharanui Regional Reserve.
