Just before you arrive at Leigh village (1km) is Matheson Bay. Originally it was the home of Captain Angus Matheson and his brother Duncan who sailed from Nova Scotia to start a new life in New Zealand. After settling in the bay the brothers built ships in their ship yard there until about 1884. As time went on the area was cleared and farmed by succeeding members of the family and other settlers who transported their produce to Auckland by steamer. Modern day Matheson Bay is a very pleasant picturesque seaside hamlet that features one of the most popular all tide beaches in the area used by picnicers, swimmers, divers/snorkelers and kayakers. Once upon a time Matheson Bay was considered to be a long way from Auckland but now it is only a pleasant 50 minutes on the motorway through to Warkworth and Matakana.
