Leigh

Settlement along the Leigh coast goes back 100’s of years, first by Maori (Ngati Wai and Ngati Manuhiri) and later by European settlers among whom was the Reverend Samuel Leigh after who the Leigh village was named. Initially it was sawmilling for the supply of wood for houses and ship building was the mainstay of the economy and later it was farming and now fishing (Leigh Fisheries) that employs the local community.

Leigh is home to the famous Leigh Café where many national and international artists have performed and also the Leigh fish and Chip Shop where countless visitors have enjoyed their fresh fish and chip meals.  The amenities include The General Store, Petrol Station, Café lunch bar, boat launching and the picturesque Leigh wharf where the fishing boats load and unload.  Over the years Leigh has developed into a highly sought after holiday destination that includes permanent residents and those who go there each weekend to their “other home” to take in the outstanding views of the Hauraki Gulf while enjoying the peace and tranquility at a place not too far from Auckland.
