Sandspit

The area known as Sandspit is one of the earliest European settlements north of Auckland. The main industries at the time were kauri logging, shipbuilding, shark fishing, shark rendering and of course, two hotels. The area later developed into dairy and beef farming and as a local port for sending produce to Auckland.  Today the wharf at the end of the Sandspit provides a convenient loading point for commercial vessels and all the private craft that come and go in the area. It is also the home of the Sandspit Ferry which has a terminal near the end of the wharf. The ferry services Kawau Island regularly and the other islands nearby when necessary. There is also a great café/restaurant at the terminal end of the Sandspit which is an excellent place to spend time watching the boats and tides going in and out. The closest service centre to Sandspit is the riverside town of Warkworth which is only 7km away.
